Elias Tobares: “The Genome” – an attempt at the discussion with the Genesis.

Elias Tobares is one of the most interesting Argentinian artists of the new generation. He specializes in drawing and multi-media installations. He gained respect among art critics with such works as ‘Septimo Día’, ‘Egroj Bird’, ‘10 pm’ or ‘Interface montaje’.

For this year’s inSPIRACJE festival he has prepared a special cycle of several drawings entitled “The Genome”, made using graphite technique.

It is a contemporary, very individual vision of the creation of the world and its further history.

The construction of the project is based on the juxtaposition of the scheme of the creation of the world by God as described in the Bible and the contemporary context of its modification by the man. On the drawings we can see seven subsequent days of the creative act: from the Nothingness on the first day to Eden on the last day, enriched by contemporary elements.

It is a one of a kind confrontation of both projects: the divine and the human one.

The artist does not present closely all works executed by God on subsequent days, but he selects the elements which are important to him; he also present those works executed by the man which he finds the most inspiring.

In the comparison of God and the man who behaves like a god the latter sometimes doesn’t do so well, since new reality created by him is not always positive.

The confrontation of the original idea and the contemporary idea is an interesting and at the same time a risky artistic technique. According to the author, his intention was to convert the presented “Genome” project into a certain starting point for reflection on the importance of God and man in the act of creation of the world and life.

Has the author achieved his aim? We will be able to verify it during the festival presentation in the FOTOART Gallery.
